MAS Youth (MY) Detroit is the division of MAS (Muslim American Society) that serves young people in the Greater Detroit area. We identify ourselves as a movement of American Muslim youth and young adults who responded to Allah's call, echoed in the message of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him:
And from among you there must be a party who invite people to all that is good and enjoin the doing of all that is right and forbid the doing of all that is wrong. It is they who will attain true success. Quran [3:104]
To fulfill this responsibility, we urge youth and young adults to strive to learn, understand, apply, spread, and advocate Islam and its values, solutions and systems in the service of the common good.
MY Vision: MAS Youth as a division of MAS is giving roots, nurturing, and establishing organized and efficient, movement oriented, Islamic work amongst all segments of youth based on the comprehensive understanding of Islam.
MY Mission: To move young people to strive for God-consciousness and social justice and convey Islam with utmost clarity.
MY Approach: MAS Youth applies a multi-method and multi-modal process of development which research has proven to be the most effective method of youth development. Our activities are open individuals of all backgrounds between the ages of 16 and 30. The MY Detroit signature projects include: MY Give, MY Revive, MY Discover and MY Connect Program. MY Give is focused on mobilizing youth to help create a better society by instilling in them the need for service and giving to those in less fortunate circumstances through a quarterly community service program. MY Revive is a gathering for youth to reconnect and revive their faith, since reviving our spirit is the first step in reviving our community. MY-Discover deliver educational workshops using an interactive and active learning approach. MY Connect Program is a weekly intensive worker development program. Hands-on or experiential learning is obtained through participating in MY committees, execution of Personal Development Programs (PDP), and participating in community building initiatives. Youth are able to learn leadership, team building, and organizational skills in addition to public speaking and communication skills. MAS Youth assists young people in developing a social consciousness by learning the importance of community involvement and activism through the MY Connect program as well as participating in the MY Give events and programs. In the course of this entire process members develop themselves in a holistic manner, while learning to serve the community, per our mission statement.
